Tips, guidance, and advices for buying a 'Brand New Motorcycle'

Posted on Feb 05th 2015

As for every new purchase, you have to do a great amount of research.  Never ever go in and purchase the motorcycle straight up, do your research, take a few test rides, all different styles makes and models to choose the best that fits your taste liking and usage. Try not to purchase a brand new motorcycle in the first few months of the year when the newer models are just out, as you will not get much if any discount. If you can wait until the end of the season you'll find the seller willing to haggle over a cheaper price to get the motorcycle out the door to make way for the next year’s models to display. You can typically count on 15%-20% mark-up.  This will help you get a good haggling price range to start at. Most motorcycle dealership have various fees, on road costs, registration etc and the like, always ask for the "out the door price" they sometimes will not calculate those fees into the cost saving you between $500 to a grand on your bill.

It doesn't hurt to do some research and see what other 'optional' extras you would end up buying anyway and ask for them at a discount price. Remember if you ask for more stuff, near the end of negotiations; expect them to say they are going to need to adjust the price.

You can buy a motorcycle with little or no money down. The more cash you’re able to bring to the table, the more leverage you have in negotiating a better rate for the loans. Motorcycle loans tend to be shorter than car loans, but can be found for up to 60 months.

Deciding What You Want: "One of the biggest mistakes is buying a bike that's cool as opposed to something that properly fits your needs," says Steven Balduzzi, who has been riding motorcycles for more than 30 years. Deciding what motorcycle to purchase is probably one of the hardest decisions.  A motorcycle can be intimidating.   Some key factors to think about are weight, engine size, riding position, mileage and price.

Search online or Visit a Dealership: After you have decided what type and kind of motorcycle you are interested in, visit the online marketplaces that sells that motorcycle or you can even visit the dealers.  Seeing the motorcycle in person can heavily influence a decision.  Talk to the salesmen and assess your information.  They are there to sell motorcycles, but they also have a lot of knowledge about the motorcycles.

Take a Test Ride: A test ride will greatly impact on your decision of purchasing a particular motorcycle. A test ride will give you the feel of how the motorcycle performs. You can feel the weight and lean of the motorcycle. Take the motorcycle around turns to feel how it handles. Get the motorcycle up to speed to shift through the gears. Apply the brakes harder than normal to see how they bite. If the motorcycle has accessories, see how they function and if you like the usability.

Obtain Financing Options: The price is always a huge factor on determining what to buy. Financing allows you to purchase a motorcycle through a loan or other borrowing measures. The larger the down payment, the less the monthly payments will be.

Obtain Insurance: Before you purchase a motorcycle, you should research insurance rates. Like buying a bike, you have a number of options when selecting insurance coverage options.  You will also need insurance in order to register your motorcycle.

Storage and Gear: Keep your new motorcycle secure in a garage or locked near your home. Protect the motorcycle with a cover and locking security system.  Wheel locks, rotor locks and chains all work well for securing your motorcycle. GPS tracking devices can be installed on the motorcycle to prevent theft.
